Play Therapy is a form of creative therapy where toys and art materials are used as the main way for children and young people to express themselves. A child may not have the words to describe how they feel, why they behave as they do or what they find difficult about life. Play Therapy provides the time, the tools and the opportunity to do this through play.
In Play Therapy, children explore their own creativity and express themselves using approaches like drawing and painting, water and clay, sand trays and miniatures, guided imagery and relaxation techniques, drama, puppetry, and much more.
Play Therapy sessions aim to support a child’s ability to develop healthy and resilient relationships, increase self-esteem and to work though difficult or traumatic experiences. Exploring through play provides a layer of story or metaphor to what is being shared and felt. This can feel safer and less intense for a child.
I'm Ruth Parry, a PTUK registered Play Therapist and Teacher covering North Essex. I graduated in psychology at the University of Bristol and I've been working with children in teaching and support roles for over twenty years.
I undertook my play therapy training as I believe passionately in the power of free exploration through play to help children navigate difficulties in their lives that they may not yet have the words to fully express.
